How Safe Is Your Boat Seat?

When’s the last time you did a full review of your boat? If your boat is brand spankin’ new then it has most likely passed all current safety standards set by organizations like, The American Boat and Yacht Council.

But for the rest of us, the ones who have installed new seats, do you know if they’ve passed safety standards? Sure the boat seat you purchased is new but that doesn’t mean it’s up to snuff with American Boat and Yacht Council standards.

What Is ABYC Standards?

The American Boat and Yacht Council is a nonprofit comprised of boat builders, engineers, marinas, boat owners, and more. Since it was founded in 1954, there has been a significant reduction in boating accidents. Their goal is to protect the safety of the boating public by setting safety standards.

The standards they create for marine manufacturers are constantly researched and updated meaning a boat seat purchased in 2010 might not meet standards from 2017. Today, 90% of boats on the water are built to ABYC safety standards. But what about the 10%? ABYC testing is only required when a product is going a new boat with new construction. This means, boat seat manufacturers don’t need to put the time or money into passing ABYC safety standards if they are selling replacement seats.

Boat Seat Standard Testing

According to ABYC, the boat seat structure standard is a guide for the design, testing, construction and installation of permanently installed seating systems in boats. ABYC created a method for testing seats to ensure their safety. Below, owner and CEO of TEMPRESS shows the first step in the ABYC testing process:
